Real Estate is More than a Career—It is a Lifetime of Enriching Experiences

Among the many different career paths that I traveled throughout my life, real estate has been the most beneficial one for me. I talk about “beneficial” in a much greater sense beyond job satisfaction, profitability, and a successful career.

When I took my very first step into the field of real estate, a well-wisher and mentor told me, “This is the only legal business where you can make as much money as we want.” That was a motivating thought at a time when I was just starting out in a new career. Undoubtedly, there is a great measure of truth in this statement.

Yes, with the right go-getter attitude, a disciplined work ethic and dedication to the job, you can make a lot of money in this business. Unfortunately, money can’t buy you happiness. What can make you truly happy and give you a sense of fulfilment is the opportunity to help others. In my years of helping to buy and sell real estate, I have had the honor to work closely with so many people, many of whom were making the very first major decision of their lifetime by investing in their first home. Whether first-time buyers or people buying and selling multiple times for investment or to align with their changing needs, I have always cherished the chance to meet new people, understand their goals, work through their challenges, and help them achieve success.

Early Days of My Real Estate Career Etched Remarkable Memories

Eager to hit the ground running and be a profitable real estate agent very quickly, I knocked the door of every potential client. Among my first few clients, I happened to meet a young boy and girl who were siblings and living in a rented basement. At the time, I never realized what I was going to do for them except sell them a home. Committed to helping them find the ideal property that fit their budget and lifestyle, we completed that transaction very successfully. More than the joy of a “closed deal”, I was overwhelmed by their gratitude towards me. Even before I could step out to buy them a house-warming gift, they surprised me with a huge bouquet of flowers to thank me! Their father also came personally to thank me, and his words forever changed my approach toward my career as a real estate agent.

I still remember exactly what he said to me: “You came into my children’s life like a miracle. Though I always wanted to guide my children to a path of success, you actually held their hands and made them a ‘Homeowner’ from a basement tenant”. He said he would never forget what I did for his children. These were complete strangers to me. Our paths happened to meet. I was able to guide them and help them in their time of need. Their gratitude defined my attitude…for the rest of my life as a real estate professional.

What did I Learn?

I learned that real estate is not only the one legal business where you can make as much wealth as you want, but it is also the best place to be if you want to help so many people out there fulfill their dreams.

  • We can help them make the right decisions about ownership of property.
  • We can guide ordinary people to create great wealth by investing in real estate.
  • We can also help people plan their retirement.
  • We can show them how to utilize the equity from their property and reinvest it back in real estate to create an enviable financial portfolio.

And one more thing that I learned from this experience is that we don’t necessarily have to depend on business referred by our families and friends. It is important to reach out to everyone that we can who needs our help. Take your real estate business to it’s peak by guiding people with your helping attitude instead of a selling attitude. You can be a salesperson a few times; but you can be an advisor and real estate consultant for a lifetime.

In my next blog, I will share more ideas and thoughts from my over 35 years of experience in business and almost two decades of experience in the real estate industry.

Thank you for reading my story, and I would love to see your comments!
